Founded in 2020 in New York City, by way of Detroit, Carter Young's inspirations are tied to the heartland. They draw inspiration from the American cultural canon — Easy Rider, William Eggleston, Coca-Cola — the backdrop of American life between the coasts. Although they now operate internationally between New York and London, their cultural roots always inform their references.
Each collection begins with an intensive research process spanning film, literature, ephemera, and music. Sometimes a song, photo, or painting becomes the keystone for a capsule, informing fabrics, colors, textures, and visuals. These touchstones play an integral role in our process, helping to contextualize our creative explorations.
The pieces are not precious and are made to be worn. Carter Young's core ranges are mainly cut from natural fibers, with many featuring vintage washes for a pre-broken-in feel. Whenever possible, they employ responsible production methods, from small-scale runs to using deadstock materials left over from other companies' excesses.
